Sleep Apnea Treatment

Sleep apnea is a condition that millions of Americans suffer from that can be debilitating. Symptoms of sleep apnea include heavy snoring, excessive daytime sleepiness, morning headaches, difficulty staying asleep, and irritability. Sleep apnea is a dangerous condition that can lead to major health issues. Sleep apnea is caused by the airways being constricted while a person is sleeping which restricts the oxygen that gets to the lungs and brain. Not getting enough sleep can cause headaches, weight gain, and over time your body could suffer from heart attacks and strokes. There is no cure for sleep apnea, just treatments. CPAP machines are available for use while sleeping, however most people find them to be too cumbersome. A better solution is an oral appliance which is designed to keep your throat open while you’re sleeping so your airway is not restricted.

Sleep Appliances Are Available

If you suffer from sleep apnea, our staff at Impressions Dentistry would like to help you. Our staff is highly trained on the creation of oral appliances; we sent them to the best training in the United States. We can custom fit an oral appliance that will help open your airways while you are sleeping. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine has approved oral-appliance therapy for treatment of patients diagnosed with mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea.

OPTISLEEP Oral Appliance

This is a non-invasive solution for sleep apnea that involves the use of an oral appliance that pulls the lower jaw slightly forward. The device enlarges the airway and activates the muscles to prevent soft tissue from collapsing and blocking airway passages. Oral appliances are recommended for patients who cannot wear other forms of treatment for sleep apnea.

Narval™ CC

This is one of the lightest oral appliances available and it is very discreet. It is made of a metal-free, biocompatible material and is specially designed to allow you to talk and breathe comfortably. It holds your jaw in a forward position while you sleep so there is more space behind your tongue. This helps prevent obstruction and snoring.

MediByte Sleep Study System

We can send our patients home with a special unit for you to perform a sleep study at home. The MediByte system is a portable sleep data recorder used to record physiological signals during sleep while you are in the comfort of your own home. The system works together to sense your sleep and record diagnostic information about snoring, sleep patterns, airflow, and more. When you return it to our office the next morning, we send the information to a sleep specialist and respiratory specialist to consult with our dentists on the best sleep appliance and course of action for your individual situation.

If you believe you are suffering from sleep apnea, don’t hesitate to give us a call to schedule a consultation. Get the restful sleep you need and deserve!
