When Are Dentures Needed?
If you are missing one or more teeth, dentures are one of your options for restoring a full set of teeth. Dentures replace missing teeth and give support to your cheek and lip in the area of the missing teeth. Advanced technology has helped make dentures look almost like natural teeth. Having a natural look will give you the confidence to talk and smile boldly.
Options for Dentures
There are two options available for dentures.
- Partial dentures – When a patient still has some or most of their original teeth they may only need partial dentures. Partial dentures are attached to a plastic base which is then placed into the mouth. By replacing the missing teeth, the remaining natural teeth are kept in place and prevented from shifting.
- Complete dentures – When a patient needs all their teeth replaced because of extraction or an accident, a complete set of dentures is created. Complete dentures are always custom fitted for each individual to ensure proper fit. They restore a patient’s natural smile which can restore their confidence when interacting with others.
How Long Do Dentures Last?
Dentures are normally replaced every 15 years because of normal wear and because over time, they can become misaligned. When you are missing teeth, your jawbone structure will slowly dissolve over time. This change in the jawbone will also effect the denture’s alignment and so a visit to the dentist will be necessary in order to adjust or replace the dentures.
